Another Reason Hip Hops Voice is less Relevant

Russell Simmons apparently doesn't have very good interview skills, so I can only guess that DeBeers hired him on to be their shucking and jiving bitch in 21st Century "Black Face" is because there are so many other shucking and jiving fools spending all of their fleeting funds at the alter of conspicuous consumption, also worship his skinny, goofy ass. I guess DeBeers recognizes that they can make money of the backs of niggers (or what do they call us in South Africa?) around the globe...we supposedly like shiny trinkets. Beat the hell out of African's to mine their pressurized coal (that's what diamonds really are by the way), so they can sell them to the descendants of Africans around the globe...not to mention every doe eyed bride to be, who sees her self worth in size, clarity and carats. Anyway, don't have time to spend on this idiot. I don't wear jewelry, just remind me to never buy any product that sell-out produces. Ever. He's an embarrassment. Le'ts compare and contrast stories. From Amnesty International and an Opinion Piece from CSM or Russell Simmons fumbling for words on CNN. Make your own decisions, I've made mine. Diamonds are an artificial comodity, made fashionable by people who have more money than good sense.

Very strong words doctor. As a woman that is admittedly too much into fashion, I find it hard to dismiss diamonds. We don’t dismiss cotton and for hundreds of years it was produced on the backs of slaves. The blood diamonds that I believe you are referring to are not the norm as they once were. We live in a cultural that glorifies the haves while demeaning the have nots. Russell Simmons is a business man first and foremost. Why is it that we hold black celebrities to this high moral standard that we don’t hold white ones to? No one says to Barbara Streisand that she can’t were this or do that because it makes her people look bad. We have got to lay off the celebrities and allow them to do what we love them for doing, entertaining us.

Cotton happens to be useful, since you can wear a nice cotton shirt to keep warm. And slaves didn't just pick cotton. The economic boon that Simmons refers to is in Botswana. But this is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to the diamond industry. This is about DeBeers protecting its business and Russell Simmons either getting used, or being complicit. The Hip Hop community already markets and sells overpriced crap to the black community. For us by us, my ass. You ever check the price tag on Sean John or Baby Phat? If you are interested in a "hero" who is for the people, and gives back to the community check out my post labeled "Nobel Peace Prize" from October 14. I see more black people worried about getting their face in Essence or buying expensive shit, than doing anything useful in the world.

What one person might call useful another person calls a waste of time. If you look at hip hop many of these rappers and moguls hire people from their neighborhood and get them off the streets and keep them employed and their families feed. To me that is grass roots type of community service. People degrade Master P for being flashy and all about the bling. But they don't talk about the schools that he sponsors in New Orleans. They don't talk about the homes he rebuilt without question after the hurricane. Rich people black or white DO NOT HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO DO GOOD IN THE WORLD. Now with that said it would be nice if they did. John Stossel did a report on how much charity the uber wealthy give out. The fact of the matter is people of all races keep their money in their pocket. While I understand your point about being more socially responsible, I am a capitalist at heart. I see this as a good business move for this man and I am glad to see that DeBeers is willing to trust a black man with Simmons background. By they way Ralph Lauren’s shirts are just as expensive.

Saudia,

What you just said really made me sad coming from you. You have more concern over one "black man" being successful than millions of people being brutalized over a fucking piece of rock. That's disgusting, Saudia. By the way I don't wear diamonds, don't buy Ralph Lauren either or Sean John or any of that other stuff. I don't buy gaudy expensive stuff, because I think it's stupid and a waste. And I think John Stossel is an idiot, who is more interested in sensationalism and the lowest common denominator than journalism. Master P probably hurt just as many people as helped after Katrina when he when he was slinging dope on the streets of Nawlin's and don't give me the excuse he was trying to feed his family. This is about Simmons getting on TV and dancing for a big company who's only interest is profit. And about how the black community has lost it's soul over material goods...even if people who look just like them are suffering. I'm ashamed of hip hop and and their ostentatious adornment. It's like we can't wait to run back to the man and give him our money. You look up to Russell Simmons? Really? I think you need to find some new heroes.

DMG,
I look up only to God and Oprah. Yes blood diamonds were a horrible part of diamonds past. And yes millions of African people died. Do you realize that prior to being enslaved we (blacks) adorned our selves. We worn the finest furs our husbands could catch, we wore head dresses, the skins of the animals. All in the need to show our opulence and grandeur. So this need to shine is nothing new. As far as the Master P's of the rap game they don't get a pass from me. However, I have to acknowledge that they are doing something better today. Russell Simmons is a business man 1st and foremost. I think we are holding on to this black conscience in an unreasonable way. Simmons is feeding his family and the families of the people that he works for.

Saudia,

Please, please, please (apologies to James Brown) tell me you aren't one of those black people who believe that we were ALL kings and queens who lived in Pre-Colonial bling. Please. You offend me and dinigrate all black people by saying that we have an inate need to be gaudy and materialistic. MOST of my ancestors, like most people in the world, had a meager existence. We were more worried about eating, and raising our children than looking good. I could give a damn less what you think Russell Simmons is. Being a business man does not excuse him from kissing the collective asses of the diamond industry who have little concern of how their business effects the lives of millions. Simmons is doing quite a bit MORE than feeding his family, that is unless they are a group of gluttons. Please stop trying to defend his actions, and how stupid he sounded on CNN. It's sad.

How's the air up there on the throne. You are passing down a whole heap of judgment. From what I have read it seems as though during the 1990's warlords did receive millions from DeBeers for diamonds mined at the expense of human lives. And in turn DeBeers made millions. However, from the things that I have heard this is not the standard at this time. What I am concerned about in this situation is why to they send the stones to Israel or Belgium to be cut. Why not allow the people of Africa to do that job as well and allow the money to flow into that country. I am all about economic empowerment. Nothing we can do to change that past. With that said I don't here your same contempt for warlords that make millions off of oil. I have to assume that you drive a car that uses gasoline. Or better yet you live in a country that killed many Africans and enslaved them. It just amazes me how people can pick and choose the sins to be outraged by. By the way all people have the innate desire to look good. Granted your financial means determines your style and taste. By the way good doctor what does your wife wear on her finger or have in her jewelry box.

The air is fine up here on the throne, I invite you to visit anytime...it may clear your thinking, long enough to see that Uncle Tom Simmons, loves to grin in the mans face, and seek the almighty dollar above seeking justice. If you haven't heard me screaming about the oil barons making money of the poor, then dear you have not been listening. Ask Cobb, or Duane. Actually I DON'T drive a car, I've said several times that I ride my Trek Mountain Bike to work or take public transportation. Yes I'm aware that I live in a country that killed many of MY anscestors, I'm not blind. Now I hope you are finally aware that I'm outraged by all of the "sins" and "sinners". People have an innate desire to LIVE and raise their children, not wear diamonds and gold. Wearing diamonds and other stupid adornments that have no function or sentimental value other than having someone stare at them and ooh and awe, is NOT worth anyones life. I'm often disgusted seeing old rich women wearing gaudy jewelry because they can, and at the same time walk by a starving man asking for money for food. My wife doesn't wear a diamond. We don't wear rings at all for that matter. We practice what we preach. What, did you think I was a hypocrite? The jewelry she wears if at all is made of silver, and has cultural significance from her country. Me? Well on occassion I admit adorn myself with black plastic Timex Expedition sports watch, and my old Marine dogtags--made of aluminum, with a rubber silencer on each tag and some 550 parachute chord. In other words I have better things to spend my "doctors" cash on. How's that? (I never thought of all the posts I've made on this blog...insulting Russell "pencil neck" Simmons would get you so riled up).

Saudia,

It's not like I'm against you wearing diamonds. You can do what you want, of course. But when you make a purchase don't be ignorant about from where that lattice-work of compressed carbon comes. Realize somebody is working under pretty shitty conditions to make you look fabulous. And don't forget that the U.S. black community is one of the most materialistic groups in the country, despite also being one of the most financially destitute. I hear someone coughing "priorities" but can't imagine where that's coming from.

Isn't there a song by Big Tymers called Still Fly?

Gator Boots, with the pimped out Gucci suit

Ain't got no job, but I stay sharp
Can't pay my rent, cause all my money's spent

but thats ok, cause im still fly
got a quarter tank gas in my new E-class

But that's alright cause i'm gon' ride

got everything in my moma's name
but im hood rich da dada dada da

Sounds like poor financial planning and the inability to defer ones desires, and downright stupid behavior.

I guess as my grandmother was correct when she says that a hit dog will holler. Maybe one day I will take a whiff of the air up there. But for now I will continue to smell my capitalist air. This will clearly have to be one of those we agree to disagree type of situations. My conscience is clear when it comes to adorning myself. Unlike the Big Tymers I do have a good financial plan. Have a happy holiday good doctor, BTW what type of doctor are you. Know good sites I can go to for Asthma. I have a 3 year old that they want to put on steroids and I am not interested.

About your daughter and steroids. Don't worry I think it's the word steroids that scares people. These aren't the same kind used to pump up Arnold Schwartzenegger. I would actually stay AWAY from do it yourself online health sites. There are too many details that you aren't prepared to consider. If your child is 3 and below, she probably hasn't been diagnosed with Asthma per se, but reactive airway disease. Steroids work pretty well, my son had them for awhile without any untoward consequences. Good luck.

Yeah and Oprah kissed Bush so the least that makes you is a fool...but I think you're both worse and wearing diamonds is like wearing little nigger children fingers --- if they were lucky enough only to loose limbs and not life. Shit low life. That's who wears diamonds.

To a vain golddigger, diamonds symbolize success and self-worth.

To an impoverished diamond miner, diamonds symbolize a hard income due to lack of better alternatives.

To a greedy diamond exec, diamonds symbolize high profits.

To a humanitarian, diamonds symbolize vanity and greed at the cost of human and environmental exploitation.
